Gold medallist in our midst
16 November 2012 - Impact Hub

Good news for Hub members! Ironmonger Row Baths near Old Street (just down the road from Hub Islington) was officially relaunched today by Paralympic gold medalist Ellie Simmonds. First opened as a wash house for the poor in 1931, the Grade II listed building now contains a new moveable floor training pool for disabled swimmers, new exercise studio and expanded spa area. But don’t worry; the refurbishments have retained the original laundry, slipper baths, sauna, steam room, gym, marble massage slabs, hot rooms and icy plunge pool. It’s a great space to relax and unwind and still attracts local people who have used the baths since it opened. A new oral history and photography project, Plunging into History, has captured the stories of the staff, volunteers and users and provides insights into the social and political history of the EC1 area.
The baths open to the public on November 24.
