Eight years ago today, HUB Islington opened its doors. Since then, the buzz created in this humble, crumbling Islington attic has sparked a global movement of over 5,000 people, across five continents.
I’m so proud to be in this cool network (especially as a member of the original HUB!) and this place has changed my life, bringing inspiration by the bucketload, new friends and a sense of belonging in this big, crazy city.
I started as a member at the stylish HUB Kings Cross, doing ethical communications work with green PR consultancy, Greenhouse. It was such a sanctuary from the soulless cafes I’d been working in and an escape from the stagnation of working from home. It was a few months later, on a visit to see a friend at HUB Islington, that I first came up these stairs, reminiscent of grungy East Berlin, and stepped into this beautiful space, flooded with natural sunlight and full of colour and plants.
People often have an emotional reaction on first coming into the HUB, but I never know whether it is just the relief of making it up four flights of stairs! There is a kind of magic to the place that’s hard to explain, but may be due to the fact that the space reflects the community it houses – passionate, creative and faithful to the idea that positive change is possible (and pragmatic enough to MAKE it happen). When I walked in here 26 months ago, I immediately felt at home and I can’t imagine what my life would have been like without the people I’ve met here and the exciting conversations I’ve had during Sexy Salad or Wine @ 5.
Thanks to the original founders, our current team of hosts and member hosts, and all the amazing members for making this such a special place. And best wishes too to Hubbers all around the world from Singapore to Sao Paolo, Madrid to Melbourne and everywhere in between, as today marks the birthday not just of us, but of the wider network too.
Please do leave your comments and tell us YOUR HUB story.
