Real Talk #2: Women sharing stories and growing together

Real Talk #2: Women sharing stories and growing together

Real Talk is a series of three workshops that will look at myths and barriers that plague feminism, equality and liberation for women. You can read about the first workshop here.

In an environment that nurtures acceptance and personal transformation, you will hear from women who have been on the journey of deconstructing negative belief systems and defying cultural and social expectations of women.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Maya Angelou

The second workshop will approach the subject of gender and sexuality taking into consideration the intersections of race, faith and culture. We will be talking about how our gender and sexuality has been shaped, by what we were taught about ourselves, the different contexts and how these messages have been shaped by patriarchy.

We will be joined by Tamara Lawrence, a London born actor, who has appeared in many TV shows and theatre productions. She is an incredibly astute, deep thinker and as a young woman who has already faced many challenges to pursue her dreams. Our host Janice will also share insights from her research on gender and sexuality from a Caribbean perspective and how perceptions are shaped by faith and culture.

Join us in continuing these conversations and making the ‘unconscious conscious’ by unearthing the shame, guilt, repression and stigma attached to gender and sexuality.

The workshops are intended to be a platform for the individual and collective voice of women to be heard and to form a network of women who want to shape and influence the society we live in. We will use methods including peer coaching, education and real life stories that foster learning and increase our understanding of each other by creating an environment that nurtures acceptance and personal transformation.
